Over the past four centuries, Albany has grown from a small Dutch settlement into New York State's Capital City in the heart of burgeoning Tech Valley.  Residents and visitors alike enjoy four unique seasons of free festivals and events, historic masterpieces, one-of-a-kind attractions, premiere shopping, and memorable meals. Teams and spectators will have many winter options to choose from while they are in Albany during the competition.  On behalf of Discover Albany, our Board of Directors and our entire community, we look forward to welcoming you!

Times Union Center - Downtown Albany

Albany's Times Union Center will be your home and is proud to host the Synchronized Skating Championships.   Formerly the Pepsi Arena, this facility continues to have great success. Renamed in January 2007, the Times Union Center is "Upstate New York's Premier Sports and Entertainment Facility."

Owned by Albany County and operated by ASM, the world's largest private management firm for public assembly facilities, the Times Union Center has an adaptable seating capacity between 6,000 and 17,500. Since Frank Sinatra christened the building on January 30, 1990, more than seven million patrons have walked through the turnstiles.

As a multi-purpose facility, the Times Union Center has hosted a variety of events, including concerts, family shows and sporting events, averaging 165 events each year.

In addition to being a regular Northeast concert stop, the Center has developed into a sports fan's dream. the Times Union Center is home to the Siena Saints Division I College basketball team. Other sporting events entertaining fans of the Capital Region include the NBA Classic, the NHL Face-Off, high school basketball and the NYSPHAA High School state wrestling championships.

The Times Union Center is a regular host to premier NCAA events. In 1995, the Center hosted the first sold out NCAA Men's Basketball Championship East Regional First and Second Rounds in the nation. The Center hosted the NCAA Hockey National Championships in 1992 and the NCAA Hockey East Regional in 1994, 1996 and 1998. The Center looks forward to celebrating the new millennium with several NCAA events calling Times Union Center home. The NCAA Hockey East Regional returned in 2000 and college hockey's National Championship took place in 2001. The NCAA Wrestling National Championships visited Albany for the first time in 2002, and the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship East Regional took to the Center's hardcourt in 2003. In 2004, 2006 & 2008 the Center welcomed back the Division I NCAA men's hockey East regionals.

Downtown Albany Attractions 

Welcome to Albany, the Capital City of New York State!  We hope you will have time to explore our beautiful 400-year-old city.  Albany's history combined with our rich Dutch architecture tell an important American story.  

Downtown Albany is home to the New York State Museum, one of the country's largest with a September 11 exhibit and a working carousel on the 4th floor.  The Albany Institute of History & Art is home to "Albany's Mummies" and was founded in 1791.  The Corning Tower Observation Deck at the Empire State Plaza is where you not only get a bird's eye view of Albany but also three mountain ranges - the Adirondacks, Berkshires, and Catskills.   
 

The Discover Albany Visitors Center offers visitors access to information seven days a week.  The knowledgeable staff can answer visitor inquiries and they are well stocked with travel brochures about New York's Capital Region.

The Visitors Center is also home to the USS Albany Exhibit, an exhibit dedicated to preserving the National Heritage of the City of Albany and to honor all those who proudly served aboard ships named after the capital city of New York State. Experience the rich history of the USS Albany ships starting in 1846 to the current day. Come walk through history and view memorabilia!

 

Lark Street 

Located just a short walk from downtown Albany's business district is Lark Street, often referred to as the "Greenwich Village" of the Capital Region. With countless restaurants, cafes, art galleries, boutiques and more, Lark Street is reminiscent of the great and colorful neighborhoods of Manhattan. Free Trolley Service in Downtown Albany
