City of Albany Neighborhoods
Albany is a city of neighborhoods. Pine Hills. Center Square. Mansion Neighborhood. Washington Square. Each has its own personality and flavor, and we want to introduce you to all of them.
Downtown Albany
What was once a trading center for the Dutch is now New York’s State Capital; Downtown Albany has grown exponentially throughout the years. The city is the home of some of the best bars, breweries, eateries, museums, historic sites, shopping centers and more. Downtown Albany houses historic attractions like the New York State Museum and the New York State Capitol.
Arbor Hill
Arbor Hill was once a home for lumber barons and railroad magnates. Today, the brownstones and rowhouses are still in use, and many have been restored to their former glory. The neighborhood is also home to Ten Broeck Mansion, the former home of the first Mayor of Albany, and the Albany Barn, a live-work studio space for working artists.”
South End
The South End of Albany is one of the largest neighborhoods in the city that contains many other smaller neighborhoods. From residential neighborhoods to industrial areas, the South End includes a wide array of communities. Historic sites such as the Schuyler Mansion and Cherry Hill reside in the South End of Albany.
Delaware Avenue
Formerly known as the Delaware Turnpike because of its location over a Native American Trail; Delaware Avenue shelters attractions such as Lincoln Park, Spectrum 8 movie theatre and the New World Bistro Bar, an 80 seat gastro pub located in the heart of the Delaware Avenue neighborhood.
Mansion Historic District
The Mansion Historic District is comprised of over 400 buildings most of which are rowhouses and townhouses. This neighborhood was the first home of many immigrants such as the Italian Americans. Popular entertainment destinations such as the MVP Arena and the Egg Performing Arts Center are located in the Mansion Neighborhood.
University Heights
The University Heights neighborhood of Albany includes the campuses of many educational institutions such as Albany Medical College, Albany Law School, Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Services and Sage College of Albany. College students give life to and set the tone for this thriving Albany, NY neighborhood.
Center Square
The Historic Center Square neighborhood encompasses some of the most amazing architecture in Albany. This neighborhood combines a youthful feeling with historic elegance. Lark Street which is recognized as one of the most lively blocks in the city, the home of countless bars, tattoo shops and ice cream parlors, resides in Center Square.
Warehouse District
Located just North of Downtown Albany, the Warehouse district is home to many historic rowhouses and warehouses. The district shelters the largest fiber glass statue in the world of what has become the city’s mascot, Nipper.
West Hill
The earliest documented residents of the West Hill neighborhood were the Algonkian and Algonquin Indian tribes. Now, an educational institution, a nature preserve and an ice skating rink inhabit the neighborhood. The Tivoli Nature Preserve, the second largest nature preserve after New York City’s Central Park, is located in West Hill.
Pine Hills
Pine Hills is located within walking distance from the University at Albany’s downtown campus. Pine Hills brings college students and traditional families together in one neighborhood with so much to see and even more to do. Every season residents, visitors and college students come together for the Pine Hills cleanup to restore beauty to such a wonderful neighborhood.
Buckingham Pond
Buckingham Pond is a neighborhood in Albany that surrounds the Buckingham Pond Park. The quiet neighborhood is comprised of mostly single family homes with beautiful walking paths and the Buckingham Park for residents and visitors to enjoy in their leisure time.
Sheridan Hollow
Sheridan Hollow is located between Downtown Albany and Arbor Hill. The friendly neighborhood was settled in the late 1700s; continuous new construction throughout the area is aiding in the growth and development of the neighborhood.
New Scotland/Woodlawn
The New Scotland Neighborhood consists of apartments, single family homes and multifamily homes. New Scotland Avenue contains bars and restaurants with great drinks and even better food.
