Thacher State Park, is situated along the Helderberg Escarpment, one of the richest fossil-bearing formations in the world. Even as it safeguards six miles of limestone cliff-face, rock-strewn slopes, woodland and open fields, the park provides a marvelous panorama of the Hudson-Mohawk Valleys and the Adirondack and Green Mountains.
The new 8,240 square-foot Thacher Park Center is situated next to the trailhead and picnic area for the Indian Ladder Trail. Come and learn more about the park's extensive trail network at the visitor's desk. Additional amenities include a breathtaking entrance hall, the 1,340-square-foot "Helderberg Room" (reservable for community events and family gatherings), an outdoor observation desk and patio for taking in dramatic views, a warming area with fireplace faced with fossil-bearing stone from the escarpment, picnic pavilions, park offices, and public restrooms.
The park has volleyball courts, playgrounds, ball fields and numerous picnic areas with nine reservable shelters. Interpretive programs are offered year-round, including guided tours of the famous Indian Ladder Trail. There are over twelve additional miles of trails for summer hiking and mountain biking, and winter cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
The Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center is located 2 miles from the park on Thompson's Lake and offers exhibits, interactive displays, trails for hiking and skiing, and educational programs.
