Family-Friendly Things to Do in Albany During Spring Break
April break is right around the corner, and Albany County has plenty to keep the whole family busy!
Whether you're looking for free museums, outdoor adventures, hands-on activities, or a relaxed afternoon out, here's your guide to spring break in Albany County.
New York State Museum
The New York State Museum is free, family-friendly, and genuinely worth a full day. Browse dinosaur fossils, a 9/11 exhibit, nature dioramas, and a working 1914 carousel. It sits right at Empire State Plaza, where you can also see the Empire State Plaza Art Collection and grab lunch at the concourse (Herbie's Burgers, Uncommon Grounds, or Honest Weight Food Co-Op Café). The New York State Capitol offers free guided tours Monday through Friday, and The Egg is right there too! Easy to make a half or full day of the whole complex.
Albany Pine Bush Preserve
The Albany Pine Bush Preserve is a rare inland pine barrens right in the heart of Albany County. Start at the Discovery Center for interactive exhibits and take-home activities, then follow the Discovery Trail outside. Six Mile Waterworks at the eastern end has a playground, fishing lake, and picnic space. Cider Belly Doughnuts is just a few minutes away.
Explore Downtown Albany
Downtown Albany packs a lot into a walkable area. The Palace Theatre hosts free family screenings during school breaks. This April break, they're showing Inside Out (2015). The USS Slater, the last destroyer escort afloat in the U.S., offers guided tours that kids genuinely enjoy. Walk the Albany Skyway to Corning Preserve for a riverfront stretch afterward. The Albany Institute of History & Art is worth a stop too. The Institute is one of the oldest museums in the country, with strong Hudson River School paintings and rotating exhibits. For food, The Hollow Bar + Kitchen and The Old English Pub are both reliable, and Nocturnal Cookies for dessert. Dutch Apple Cruises also runs narrated Hudson River cruises in spring. Five Rivers Environmental Education Center
A free nature destination in Delmar, Five Rivers Environmental Education Center has interpretive trails great for kids! The Nature's Accessible Backyard Trail and the Woodlot Trail are both worth exploring. Stop into the Visitors Center first.
Stuyvesant Plaza
If you're looking for a low-key outing, Stuyvesant Plaza on Western Avenue is a solid family stop. The open-air shopping center is home to The Book House, one of the best independent bookstores in the Capital Region and a natural destination for kids. During spring break, The Pottery Place is hosting Storytime sessions (ages 2–6) on March 27 and 28, featuring Harry the Dirty Dog followed by a pottery activity. And Sur La Table is running a Spring Cupcake Party on April 4, a hands-on baking class designed for adults and kids to do together. Thacher State Park
About 30 minutes from downtown Albany, John Boyd Thacher State Park has sweeping Hudson Valley views and the Indian Ladder Trail, a limestone gorge walk kids tend to love. Spring is a great time to visit. WildPlay Thacher runs an aerial adventure course with ziplines and opens on May 9 for the 2026 season!
