    Join the Albany County Historical Association for a virtual workshop on uncovering stories from historic handwriting, focusing on the Albany NY region from 1664-1827, and learn about upcoming archives and preservation grants opportunities.


    Some questions we will explore:



    • What can you learn about someone's life from their handwriting?

    • What can we tell about language patterns from historic documents?

    • What stories of African American and Native American history emerge from historic documents?

    • What are opportunities for grant funding for caring for your historic collections?


    This workshop is part of the Documenting Untold Stories 1664-1827 Project done in collaboration with historical repositories in Albany County NY.


    The workshop is offered:



    • Tuesday, November 19 from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

    • Tuesday, December 10 from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm


    With the support of an Archives Collaborations Grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives, The Documenting Untold Stories 1664-1827 Project is creating an inventory of documents in Albany County, New York historical societies and other repositories that pertain to enslaved, free Black, and Indigenous people in Albany County, and the complex family and community relationships within this region. The outcome of this project is a digital exhibit related to Albany County history from 1664-1827.


    About the presenters:


    Aaron Bradt is the Collections Associate at the Albany County Historical Association | Ten Broeck Mansion. He has coordinated a team of volunteers to digitize and transcribe the ACHA’s manuscript collections; to date over 2200 images have been uploaded to the NY Heritage database. He holds a MA in Public History and a MS in Information Science specializing in Archives and Records Administration from the SUNY Albany.


    Kathryn Kosto is the Albany County Historical Association's Executive Director. She previously served as curator of the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow House (Cambridge MA), and an archives specialists with the papers of Frederick Law Olmsted (Brookline MA). She studied 18th century Dutch at Leiden University (Netherlands). She holds a BA in history and the history of art from Yale University and a MA in history from Cornell University.


    This project has been implemented with the support of an Archives Collaborations Grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) of the National Archives.
