With a history dating back 400 years, explore Albany's centuries-long story and see ways in which major historical events crossed paths with New York's capital county. Albany was settled by the Dutch in 1624, emerged as a pivotal player during the foundation of our nation, and has continued to evolve throughout time. Discover Shaker Heritage Society, site of the first Shaker settlement in the country. Attend a program at the Pride Center of the Capital Region, the oldest continuously operating Pride Center in the nation. Or visit the Underground Railroad Education Center at the Stephen & Harriet Myers Residence. The home played an important role as a stop on the Underground Railroad.

Empire State Plaza Art Collection

Considered one of the most important state collections of modern art in the country, head over to the Empire State Plaza to explore over 90 pieces of abstract art throughout the concourse and inside buildings. Tours are offered Mondays through Fridays, contact the Plaza Visitor Center at (518) 474-2418 to reserve one! 

Albany Institute of History & Art

This Albany museum is one of the oldest in the country founded in 1791. Famous for its collection of Hudson River School paintings, the museum holds various collections of national significance. The museum blends ongoing and rotating exhibitions. Stop in to explore Enchanting Threads: The Art of Salley Mavor on display through February 23, 2025. 

Albany Center Gallery

With rotating exhibits throughout the year, there's always something new to see at Albany Center Gallery! Since 1972, AGC has showcased the work of emerging and established artists from around the area. The gallery also hosts community events throughout the year. 

Albany Barn

The Albany Barn is a community workspace for local talent to thrive. Artists can take up residency in the space to work on their pieces. The Barn hosts exhibitions by these resident artists, hosts Open Studios where visitors can meet the artist in person, as well as workshops. Local groups also use the space for rehearsal space and community theatre.

Capital Walls Murals

Spearheaded by Albany Barn, Albany Center Gallery, and ParkAlbany, the eye-catching Capital Walls murals can be found throughout the capital city. The goal of the project is to uplift and inspire the community. Book a walking tour to learn more about each mural by contacting Karina at development@albanycentergallery.org

The Pottery Place

Paint your own masterpiece at the Pottery Place located in Stuyvesant Plaza. Pick from a series of pottery items from dishware to decorative pieces and add your own unique touch. The Pottery Place will fire your piece and have it ready for pick-up just one week later.

Old Songs Community Art Center

This non-profit organization in Voorheesviille offers everything from instrument lessons, to open mics, to live concerts, to a monthly community, folk song gathering. Plus, every June the Center hosts the Old Songs Music Festival at the Altamont Fairgrounds. Visitors can jam out with interactive sessions and music workshops. 

Albany Barn

Every Monday night, join resident artist Jordan Taylor Hill for a West African Drum & Dance Class. There is no experience needed to learn this new music skill! 

Literature  

This back-to-school season, make sure to hit the books by attending an event hosted by the New York State Writer's Institute. Housed within the University at Albany, the Writer's Institute explores and teaches on the craft of writing, celebrates diverse voices across all genres, and honors the power of literature. Throughout each season, the organization offers varied events from author book talks to film screenings to the Albany Book Festival and Albany Film Festival.

Literary Legacies

From Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick who grew up in the capital city to Toni Morrison who premiered her first play in downtown’s Capital Repertory Theatre, Albany is full of literary legacies.
