NYSPHSAA WRESTLING TOURNAMENTS EXPECTED TO HAVE $1.19 MILLION IN ECONOMIC IMPACT TO ALBANY COUNTY

Times Union Center to host state high school wrestling championships Feb. 28 and 29

ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 27, 2020) – Discover Albany will welcome visiting athletes for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s 2020 High School Wrestling Championships, held Feb. 28-29 in the Times Union Center in Downtown Albany.

These high school athletes, coaches, and their families will bring more than $1.19 million in direct spending. The NYSPHSAA’s Wrestling Championships have held their event in Albany annually since 2009.

Hundreds of high school wrestlers will compete on the floor of the Times Union Center, bringing the teams and their families to Albany County hotels, restaurants, and attractions. This event generates over 1,800 contracted room nights at hotels with athletes, families and wrestling enthusiasts.

“The NYSPHSAA’s Wrestling Championships have been coming to Albany since 2009. It’s a great event and we are excited to be the host city again this year,” says Jill Delaney, President and CEO of Discover Albany. “In the past few years, Albany has been able to establish itself as go-to destination for sporting events and tournaments of all kinds. These events bring in a large number of people and have a significant economic impact on our region.”

According to the Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) Event Impact Calculator, a tool that measures the economic value of an event and calculates its return to local taxes, the weekend wrestling championship will account for:
 

  • 1,800 total room nights at area hotels throughout Albany County
  • $300,000 in food and beverage spending
  • $264,000 in direct spending at hotels
  • $216,000 in retail spending
  • $410,000 in transportation, recreation, and space rental combined

 

Parking for the tournament will be available in the Green-Hudson Garage, located on Hudson Avenue and Green Street. In the event the Green-Hudson Garage is filled, overflow parking will be available in the Riverfront Garage located on Columbia Street and the Quackenbush Garage located on Orange Street. Visitor parking is also available beneath the Empire State Plaza, in addition to metered street parking available Monday-Friday from 8am-6pm and complimentary street parking in the evenings and on weekends.
