An exhibit dedicated to preserving the National Heritage of the City of Albany and to honor all those who proudly served aboard ships named after the capital city of New York State. Experience the rich history of the USS Albany ships starting in 1846 to the current day. Come walk through history and view memorabilia.1846- The first ALBANY, a 22-gun sloop-of-war was commissioned in November 1846.1869- The second ALBANY was constructed in 1864. She was a 14-gun power driven sloop-of-war and originally christened the USS Contoocook. Her name was changed to ALBANY in 1869.1900- The third ALBANY CL-23 was purchased by the United States in 1898 and two years later was placed on commission. She reached the venerable age of fifty before being stricken from the Navy list in 1929.1946- The fourth ALBANY CA-123 was constructed as a heavy cruiser. She was commissioned in the Boston Navy Yard on June 15, 1946. On June 30, 1958, the ship was placed out of commission for conversion to a guided missile cruiser. Effective November 1, 1958 her hull classification and number were changed to CG-10 and in 1962 emerged as the world's first guided missile cruiser. She served in the Mediterranean and North Atlantic and became the Flagship of the Commander of the 6th Fleet. She was decommissioned in Norfolk, Virginia in August 1980. (Be sure to visit the courtyard to view the ship's bell)1990- The fifth and present ALBANY SSN-753 is an attack submarine that was commissioned on April 7, 1990. She incorporates the latest in state-of-the-art combat systems, vertical launch tubes and arctic ice break-through capability.Located at the Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center at 25 Quackenbush Square ( corner of Broadway and Clinton Ave.)Visit our website for additional information.
