  • Overview

Discover New York's Dutch heritage at the country estate of Casparus Francis Pruyn (1792-1846). Along with his job as land and business agent for Stephen Van Rensselaer, the last Dutch Patroon, Mr. Pruyn used this land as his summer home and working farm. Dutch ambiance radiates throughout this classic beautifully restored house (ca. 1830), a blend of Federal and Greek revival architecture. The vast center hall with elegant winding staircase welcomes you. In days of old the wide entrance and hallway were used to accommodate guests at large parties. This country manor is filled with period furniture and changing exhibits. As you stroll the estate's five and one-half acres, follow the red brick walk to the large picturesque Buhrmaster Barn built with hand-hewn beams and wooden pegs and crowned with a cupola. The Verdoy Schoolhouse, built in 1910, is a good example of the early one-room schools built in the Town of Colonie until the 1950s. The school is furnished with desks, books, and a Meneely bell (ca. 1864), made in West Troy (Watervliet). Vibrant herb and perennial gardens grace the grounds that are landscaped with brick walks, picket fences, and a pergola. A visit to the tool museum/privy, smokehouse, potting shed, and carriage house complete your tour. This living cultural center hosts numerous educational activities, musical presentations, and craft groups as well as contra dancing, summer concerts, business and civic groups, and weddings and private parties. The house, barn and schoolhouse are available for rental.>Visit our website for additional information.
