Holiday Happenings in Albany, NY!

Albany, N.Y.— The holidays always have a way of sneaking up on us, and although we're still several weeks out, now is the perfect time to start planning a trip to Albany County. Whether you want to go ice skating outside or discover childlike wonder at the sight of 125 holiday light displays, Albany offers no shortage of options for all your needs this season.

If you are not-so-patiently waiting for the most wonderful time of the year, you can get your fix of the holiday spirit even before December in Albany! The annual Capital Holiday Lights in the Park event kicks off November 19th in Albany's historic Washington Park. Drive through the awe-inspiring displays with loved ones then do a little holiday shopping in the park's Lakehouse featuring wares from local vendors and a few favorite holiday refreshments.

Every year on the first Sunday of December, Albany officially kicks off the holiday season. Join in on the wonder this year on December 6th at the Empire State Plaza for a day full of events in the heart of the city. The day begins with the annual Great Train Extravaganza in the Empire State Plaza Convention Center, featuring over 200 tables of model trains, train sets, and other railroad memorabilia that are definitely worth a stop!

If you've worked up an appetite looking at all of those trains, make sure your next stop is at the Taste NY Holiday Expo at the NYS Museum to satisfy your sweet tooth with the famous We Do Fondue Chocolate Fountain and much more. Finally, witness the Empire State Plaza turn into a winter wonderland with Ice Skating, live music, and New York State's official Tree Lighting Ceremony at 5pm. Don't miss out on this jam-packed day of holiday traditions!

For a unique yet traditional perspective on the holiday season, the Farmer's Museum is once again holding their Candlelight Evening event. Visitors are treated to horse drawn wagon rides, bonfires, caroling and more that perfectly paints a picture of what this season was like in a peaceful and elegant rural village in the 19th century.

Even after most of the major winter holidays are over, the city of Albany still has a festive and generous spirit! The Albany Chef's Food & Wine Festival's Wine and Dine for the Arts event celebrates culinary arts in the Capital Region with a 3 day festival. Not-for-profit arts organizations are chosen as beneficiaries every year, and the event has donated almost a half a million dollars to beneficiaries since its inception. Bringing out the best and brightest chefs in the Capital Region, this event is a must for foodies everywhere!

SAVE THE DATE

Don't forget that one of the largest culinary festivals in Upstate New York is happening in Albany on January 14-16th, 2016! It'll be here before you know it!
