On behalf of the Albany County Convention & Visitors Bureau we are delighted to welcome the 96th Annual American Legion - NYS Convention to New York State's historical Capital City.

We are certain your experience will be productive and personally rewarding, but will also provide you with an opportunity to discover all that Albany has to offer. From shopping to dining, to arts and entertainment opportunities, and countless cultural cuisine venues, Albany has it all for you to take in!

The Desmond Hotel & Conference Center will be the host hotel for this prestigious convention. The Albany Marriott will be home to the American Legion Auxiliary and The Holiday Inn Wolf Road will be the American Legion Son's headquarters. All sleeping room reservations must be submitted by your County Housing Chairman. Please do not contact the hotels directly. All of the hotels are all centrally located along convenient Wolf Road. You will find many options for shopping and dining in close proximity, including over 40 restaurants and Colonie Center Shopping Mall which features L.L. Bean, P.F. Chang's, The Cheesecake Factory, Sephora, Christmas Tree Shops and Regal Cinemas Stadium 13. Located at Wolf Road Shoppers Park is a favorite clothing store, Talbot's (outlet store) click here to learn more.

Approximately 30 minutes north of Wolf Road is the New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center. The mission of the museum and research center is to preserve, interpret and disseminate the story, history and records of New York State's military forces and veterans. The collection is divided into the museum and the library/archives holdings. Begun in 1863, the collection has not had a secure, permanent home until the Governor announced in 2001 that the historic armory in Saratoga Springs, NY would be renovated to house the collection. The building, designed by Isaac Perry and constructed in 1889, is a fine example of armory architecture that was popular in upstate New York in the late 1800's. The museum houses over 10,000 artifacts dating from the Revolutionary War to Desert Storm that relate to New York State's military forces, the state's military history and the contributions of New York's veterans. The artifacts include uniforms, weapons, artillery pieces, and art. A significant portion of the museum's collection is from the Civil War.

Located in the Saratoga National Park is the Saratoga Battlefield exhibit. Begin your visit at the Visitor Center, where you can pick up a park map & brochure and pay your entrance fee. The Visitor Center also has restrooms, a book and gift shop, 20-minute orientation film, fiber-optic light map, timeline display, and artifact display. Tours of the Battlefield are self-guiding, using information in the park brochure, optional audio tour CD, optional cell phone or MP3 tour, and interpretive stations along the way.

Just a stone's throw away from the hustle and bustle of Wolf Road, is The Crossings of Colonie, an ideal place for walking, running, biking and skating. Conveniently bordering the Crossings is the Rudy A. Ciccotti Family Recreation Center, one of the most comprehensive fitness facilities in the Capital Region that includes a family friendly water park.

Approximately 20 minutes from Wolf Road is the contemporary design of the Empire State Plaza, completed as a vision of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller in 1978. The Plaza was built not only to serve as government offices, but as a center of arts, culture and community activity. The New York State Museum (the largest State Museum in the country), the Empire State Art Collection and the Empire State Performing Arts Center (known as The Egg for its unusual and distinctive design) are all contained at the Plaza. In addition, you will be able to visit the NYS Capitol as well as the Albany Institute of History & Art.

The Albany Heritage Area Visitors Center offers visitors access to information seven days a week. The knowledgeable staff can answer visitor inquiries and they are well stocked with travel brochures about the capital region of New York State. The Visitors Center is also home to the USS Albany Exhibit, an exhibit dedicated to preserving the National Heritage of the City of Albany and to honor all those who proudly served aboard ships named after the capital city of New York State. Experience the rich history of the USS Albany ships starting in 1846 to the current day. Come walk through history and view memorabilia!
